ÉCÔNE/VATICAN CITY (Worthy News) – The Catholic Church faced one of its most serious internal confrontations in decades Wednesday after the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) consecrated four bishops without papal approval, despite an emotional last-minute appeal from Pope Leo XIV.

In a personal letter to SSPX Superior Rev. Davide Pagliarani, the pontiff urged him to abandon the consecrations, warning that proceeding would constitute a “schismatic act” under Catholic canon law.

“I plead with you and ask you with all my heart: please turn back!” Leo wrote, describing the consecrations as a “sin of extreme gravity.”

Yet the society celebrated a solemn traditional Latin Mass and consecrated the four bishops despite Vatican warnings of schism and excommunication. It defended the move as a “sacred duty” to preserve what it views as authentic Catholic tradition.

According to the Vatican, the consecrations incur automatic excommunication under Catholic canon law for the bishop administering the rite and the four newly consecrated bishops.

VATICAN WARNS OF CONSEQUENCES

Pope Leo warned that repeating the events of 1988—when SSPX founder Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre consecrated four bishops without papal approval—would further isolate the society and harm the spiritual lives of its followers.

“I urge you to consider carefully the spiritual good of the faithful, because the schismatic act you are about to undertake would deprive them of the licit, and in some cases, even valid reception of the sacraments,” he stressed.

However, despite Pope Leo’s appeal, bells tolled through the Alpine valley of Écône, Switzerland, as hundreds of priests processed toward an outdoor altar amid clouds of incense before thousands of worshippers gathered at the society’s seminary.

The lengthy ceremony, accompanied by Gregorian chant and organ music and livestreamed worldwide, went ahead despite the pope’s appeal.

At the start of the Mass, a priest read a statement defending the consecrations as a necessary response to what the society called a crisis within the Catholic Church.

ROOTS OF THE DIVISION

“Before God, we consider it a sacred duty towards Holy Church and towards souls to proceed with the consecration of bishops who are entirely faithful to her holy tradition and to her constant magisterium,” the statement declared, adding that any penalties imposed would have “no validity.”

The Society of St. Pius X was founded by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in opposition to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), commonly known as Vatican II.

The council transformed the Catholic Church’s approach to ecumenism, interfaith dialogue, and the role of the laity. It encouraged closer relations with other Christian denominations and with followers of religions including Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and others.

It also authorized the wider use of local, or vernacular, languages in the Mass while preserving Latin as the official language of the Roman Rite. The SSPX argues those reforms weakened Catholic doctrine and identity and continues to champion the traditional Latin Mass and other pre-Vatican II practices.

The ceremony marked the Society of St. Pius X’s first episcopal consecrations since the controversial events of 1988, when its founder ordained four bishops.

HISTORIC SCHISM

Although some canonical penalties were later lifted during reconciliation efforts, the SSPX has never been granted full canonical status within the Catholic Church.

The society insists the latest consecrations were not intended as a rejection of Pope Leo’s authority but were necessary because only two of its bishops remained to serve its growing international network of churches, schools, seminaries, and missions.

The four newly consecrated bishops are Pascal Schreiber of Switzerland, Michael Goldade of the United States, Michel Poinsinet de Sivry of France, and Marc Hanappier, also of France.

Church analysts estimate the SSPX has roughly half a million followers worldwide and operates some 800 places of worship in 77 countries.

However, numerous Catholics—including conservative and traditional Catholics who favor the Latin Mass—have opposed the consecrations, arguing that fidelity to Catholic tradition cannot be separated from obedience to the pope.

BIBLICAL CONCERNS RAISED

Outside the Catholic Church, many Bible-believing Christians have also raised concerns about certain Catholic teachings and practices, including Marian devotion, papal authority, and other doctrines they believe are not supported by Scripture.

These longstanding Biblical differences, however, are distinct from the current dispute between the Vatican and the SSPX.

Yet the SSPX maintains that it is preserving the authentic teachings of the Catholic Church during what it describes as a time of doctrinal confusion.

The confrontation is among the gravest challenges to Catholic unity in decades as Pope Leo XIV seeks to preserve a united Catholic Church while pursuing dialogue with traditionalist Catholics.
