(Worthy News) – A Christian pastor and six others have been executed in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains after being arrested by an armed faction, according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW).

The Rev. Adil Idris Jangoul, a leader with the Sudanese Episcopal Church, was taken into custody July 23 by members of the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM/N) at his residence inside a church compound in Heban. Witnesses said Jangoul cooperated with his captors and was taken without violence, but his body was later discovered along a road with six members of the predominantly Christian Otoro ethnic group. CSW said all seven had been extrajudicially executed.

The killings come amid growing instability in Sudan and renewed violence in the Nuba Mountains, a region historically known for religious and ethnic diversity. In a separate attack the same day, at least 10 people were reportedly killed and more than 20 others — including children and another Christian minister — were taken hostage. The captives were released unharmed five days later following appeals from local church leaders.

Christians throughout Sudan have faced mounting pressure as the country’s civil war has weakened central authority and allowed armed groups to operate with increasing impunity. Churches have been attacked or seized, while Christian leaders and converts from Islam remain particularly vulnerable to intimidation, abduction and violence.

CSW urged authorities to investigate the killings and move quickly to prevent further bloodshed, warning that escalating ethnic and religious tensions threaten the Nuba Mountains’ long tradition of peaceful coexistence.
