(Worthy News) – The World Health Organization is warning that the rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo could surpass the devastating 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic and become the worst Ebola outbreak ever recorded.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday that the epidemic is already the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record and is spreading faster than any previous outbreak.

“At its current pace, it is on track to eclipse the West African Ebola outbreak of 2014 to 2016,” Tedros said during a WHO media briefing.

As of Wednesday, Congolese authorities had reported 4,449 confirmed cases and 2,061 deaths across five provinces. By Thursday, government figures had risen to 4,566 infections and 2,128 deaths, according to Reuters.

The outbreak has since reached Bas-Uele province after an infected motorcycle taxi driver traveled from Haut-Uele and died in the provincial capital of Buta. Officials fear he may have exposed numerous people after visiting several medical facilities before his death.

The outbreak is being driven by the relatively rare Bundibugyo Ebola virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Two vaccines designed specifically against the strain have entered early human safety trials, while researchers are also examining whether vaccines developed for other Ebola strains could provide protection.

The crisis is particularly severe in Ituri province, which accounts for roughly 90% of cases and 80% of deaths. WHO officials say many infections are occurring outside known contact lists, suggesting hidden transmission chains remain active.

The 2014–2016 West African epidemic killed more than 11,000 people. The current Congo outbreak has reached more than 2,100 deaths far faster, raising fears that without stronger containment measures, its toll could climb dramatically.

Christian Missionaries and Ministries on the Front Lines

The Ebola crisis is also directly affecting Christian missionaries, hospitals, pastors and relief organizations serving in eastern Congo.

Earlier in the outbreak, American missionary physician Dr. Peter Stafford contracted Ebola while serving in Congo with the Christian mission organization Serge. Stafford had been working near the center of the outbreak and was eventually evacuated for specialized medical treatment. Serge later reported that repeated testing showed no detectable virus and that he had recovered sufficiently to be released from isolation.

Stafford and his wife, Rebekah, are missionary doctors connected with Nyankunde in eastern Congo, an area where Christian medical workers have continued serving communities despite the dangers posed by Ebola and longstanding regional violence.

Samaritan’s Purse is also operating Ebola treatment centers in Bunia and Nyankunde, near the epicenter of the outbreak. The Christian humanitarian organization established specialized facilities to isolate infected patients, provide medical treatment, and prevent further transmission. Its Bunia center has 40 beds, while the Nyankunde facility has 31.

The ministry has also worked with churches and communities to overcome fear and misinformation—one of the major obstacles facing Ebola responders. Samaritan’s Purse says its teams are providing care while serving patients in Jesus’ name.

Meanwhile, World Relief has mobilized a Christian emergency response across the region, working through local churches, community leaders and established networks to educate families, strengthen prevention efforts and help vulnerable communities.

Local Congolese pastors have also emerged as important voices during the epidemic. Churches are helping grieving families while pastors work to counter rumors and misinformation that can discourage infected people from seeking treatment or cooperating with health authorities.

The involvement of churches could prove especially important in remote communities where pastors and Christian ministries often have relationships and trust that government agencies or international organizations lack.

For Christians serving in Congo, the outbreak is becoming more than a public-health emergency. It is increasingly a mission field marked by extraordinary risk, where doctors, missionaries, pastors and relief workers are caring for the sick while bringing hope to communities confronting disease, conflict and death.
