Obama Sends More Troops to Iraq

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Worthy News)– U.S. President Barack Obama ordered another 200 troops to Iraq to protect American interests in the country.

The new deployments will bring the total of U.S. Troops in Iraq to approximately 750, the Pentagon said.

“In light of the security situation in Baghdad, I have ordered up to approximately 200 additional U.S. Armed Forces personnel to Iraq to reinforce security at the U.S. Embassy, its support facilities, and the Baghdad International Airport,” the President said in a letter to Congress.

The troops arrived Sunday and Monday, the Pentagon said.

“The presence of these additional forces will help enable the embassy to continue its critical diplomatic mission and work with Iraq on challenges they are facing as they confront Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant,” said Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon’s Press secretary.
