TOKYO, JAPAN (Worthy News) –- Japan has asked several companies to help it develop more geothermal power plants linked to its 108 active volcanoes, about 10 percent of the world’s total.
Japan has long been dependent on foreign energy and the latest strategy is part of its efforts to become more energy independent, Worthy News learned Tuesday, January 6.
Japan produces currently about 530 kilowatt of electricity annually from geothermal power plants.
Geothermal power utilizes hot water or steam, extracted from deep underground reservoirs to rotate a steam turbine. It is considered a “green alternative” for traditional fossil fuel burning plants, as geothermal power doesn’t emit carbon dioxide, blamed by groups of scientists for climate change.
