Russia refuses to continue Iran arms embargo
by Jordan Hilger, Worthy News Correspondent
(Worthy News) – Russia said it will not extend an arms embargo on Iran that the 2015 nuclear accord with world powers promised to lift within 5 years, raising eyebrows in the US.
The embargo, which was approved by the UN, prevented Iran from buying offensive weaponry, but in anticipation of the end to the ban on weapons sales, Russia has already sold Iran its S-300 anti-aircraft system.
“[It] is important for Russia as it will bring it closer to Iran and opens up the world’s last big untapped weapons markets,” said Ruslan Pukhov, an analyst in Moscow.
The US Defense Intelligence Agency said in November that lifting the ban will allow Iran to procure military hardware “it has largely been unable to acquire for decades.”
