(Worthy News) – Europe’s death toll from the new coronavirus COVID-19 approached 100,000 on Sunday, and over 1 million Europeans were infected, a European health agency announced.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control said there are “1,018,221 cases. The five countries reporting most cases are Spain (191,726), Italy (175,925), Germany (139,897), United Kingdom (114,217) and France (111,821).”

Sunday’s sobering milestone came just days after the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that Europe is still in the “eye of the storm” of the pandemic. WHO officials also claimed there is no evidence that people who have survived a bout of coronavirus become immune from the sometimes deadly disease. That’s why the WHO warned that nations should move with “extreme caution” when considering easing lockdowns.

The announcement came as a setback for at least 4.5 billion people who are confined to their homes worldwide as part of government-imposed social distancing measures. Among those locked up are millions of already impoverished people who lost their jobs as a result.

Over 2.3 million people have been infected by COVID-19, resulting in more than 160,000 deaths, most of them in Europe, according to official estimates.
