(Worthy News) – US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers intercepted a shipment of 10,800 assault weapon parts that was smuggled from China and destined for Florida last month, GreatgameIndia.com reported. The shipment was seized by border officials in Louisville, Kentucky on May 22.

The shipment had come from Shenzhen in China and was described as containing 100 steel pin samples. In a press release, border officials said applying this type of false description is common practice among contraband smugglers trying to avoid detection. The shipment was intended for a residential address in Melbourne, Florida, GreatgameIndia.com said.

Louisville Port DirectorThomas Mahn said in a statement: “The importing of any type of munitions is regulated by the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives).” Under US law, imported weapons or ammunition must be made by a licensed importer, dealer or manufacturer.

“This smuggler was knowingly trying to avoid detection, however, our officers remain vigilant, ensuring our community is safe,” Mahn added.

The shipment was sent to the CBP Center of Excellence and Expertise, Machinery team to be appraised; it was found to have an estimated value of $129,600.
