Bulgaria in Europe

(Worthy News) –
Thousands of protestors took to the streets of Sofia and at least 10 other Bulgarian towns for the fourth day Sunday in demonstrations against government corruption, VOA reports. During a march to Parliament in Sofia, more than 3,000 protestors called for the conservative government to resign with shouts of “Mafia!” The protests were triggered in support of socialist President Rumen Radev’s, after prosecutors and heavily armed police raided presidential offices on Thursday, VOA reported.

The president’s legal affairs and anti-corruption secretary and his security and defense adviser were taken for questioning and their offices searched during the course of two investigations into influence-peddling and disclosure of state secrets. The protestors began demonstrations after the searches, accusing the government and chief prosecutor of an attack against Radev. The president has openly accused the cabinet of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov of having “links with oligarchs.”

Up to one million citizens have signed an online petition calling for Borisov to resign. Moreover, the socialist opposition party said Sunday that they would table a motion of no confidence in the government Wednesday, on the grounds of corruption.

Although Friday’s rally turned violent and 18 protestors were arrested, further protests have been planned for Monday afternoon and Thursday.
