(Worthy News) – A well-known Iranian journalist Momahad Ahwaze has said that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has transferred his power to his son Mojtaba Khamenei because of increasing concerns about the state of his health, Newsweek reported on Saturday.

Having helped to expose the extent of Iran’s battle with COVID-19, Ahwaze made his statement about the Ayatollah on Twitter, a platform on which he has a large following, Newsweek said. In its report, Newsweek confirmed it has not been able to independently verify Ahwaze’s assertions.

“Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was scheduled to meet on Friday with the Iranian Leader Khamenei, this meeting between [Khamenei] and President Rouhani was canceled due to the deterioration of Khamenei’s health condition,” Ahwaze tweeted in Arabic.

Ahwaze added that he did not know the cause of Khamenei’s ill-health but that he thought it might be prostate cancer, Newsweek reports.

Newsweek notes that if Khamenei were to step down altogether now, it would be at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and Israel: Iranian officials have blamed Israel for the assassination of top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh on November 27 and have threatened “severe revenge and punishment” for it.
