(Worthy News) – The United States will soon announce new sanctions against Russian individuals and entities for alleged election interference and malicious cyber activity, Voice of America reports. It is expected that thirty organizations will be blacklisted and that some 10 Russian officials in the US will be issued with orders to leave the country.

While the White House, the State Department, and the Treasury Department have not yet published confirmation of the move to impose sanctions, VOA said the report of the plan had come from sources familiar with the matter.

The sanctions would be imposed as retaliation for the SolarWinds cybersecurity attack that the US government has said was probably planned by Russia, VOA reported. This attack was described by Microsoft President Brad Smith as “the largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen.”

The US government also wants to retaliate against Russia for alleged interference in the 2020 US presidential election, VOA said. US intelligence agencies reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin had likely tried to swing the election in favor of former President Donald Trump.

During a call Tuesday, Biden reportedly told Putin that the US will act “firmly” in responding to those actions, VOA reports.
