(Worthy News) – The United Nations announced Monday that at least 55 people were murdered overnight in eastern Congo, when the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) Islamist terror group attacked two villages close to the border with Uganda, Reuters reports.

According to the United Nations, the ADF murdered 850 people in Congo last year; in March the United States listed the group as a terrorist organization.

The Congolese army and a local civil rights group said the latest killings took place during ADF attacks on the village of Tchabi and on a displaced-person camp near the village of Boga, Reuters reports. The UN office for humanitarian affairs added in a statement Monday that the terrorists abducted civilians and burned houses in addition to murdering residents.

In a tweet, Pierre Boisselet of the Kivu Security Tracker (KST) which has recorded violent unrest in eastern Congo since June 2017, said: “It’s the deadliest day ever recorded by the KST.”

In an effort to restrain the increasing attacks by militants, Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi declared a state of siege in Congo’s North Kivu and Ituri provinces on May 1, Reuters reports. Uganda has said it will help by sharing intelligence and coordinating operations against the militant rebels, but will not deploy troops to Congo, Reuters reported.
