(Worthy News) – Texas faced mounting pressure Friday to annul America’s most restrictive abortion legislation after the U.S. Justice Department launched a lawsuit.

Liberal President Joe Biden pledged to fight restrictions on abortions in the Republican-ruled U.S state, a move welcomed by prosecutors. “The (Texas) act is clearly unconstitutional,” Attorney General Merrick Garland told reporters.

“This kind of scheme to nullify the Constitution of the United States is one that all Americans, whatever their politics or party, should fear,” he stressed

The Justine Department’s lawsuit comes after the Supreme Court backed the Texas abortion ban.

In a 5-4 vote, Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, President Donald Trump’s appointed Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, and Neil Gorsuch successfully argued the law should stay in place. They said the legislation is still being litigated in the lower courts.

However, Justice Stephen Breyer criticized his fellow conservative justices’ decision to uphold the strict Texas legislation that bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

Breyer, the court’s most senior liberal member, called the majority opinion “very, very, very, wrong,” he said.

Democrats also expressed outrage over the court’s move. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a landmark 1973 case known as Roe v. Wade, confirmed a woman’s right to an abortion. However, Republican-led conservative states, notably in the south, have sought to roll back abortion through legislation.

The courts have regularly blocked the attempts to restrict access to abortion. But a Supreme Court shifted to the right during the presidency of Donald J. Trump, who opposes abortion.
