Nancy Pelosi Steps Down As US Democratic Leader

WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to hold that top position, says she will step down and not seek re-election as the House Democratic caucus top leader.

Her decision came after the Democrats lost control over the House of Representatives, though they kept a majority in the Senate.

However, Pelosi will continue as a member of the House.

Her decision ends a historic leadership tenure during which she oversaw the passage of major legislation, and rioters stormed the Capitol with clashes killing five people.

“For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus,” Pelosi, 82, said in a speech on the House floor.

Yet she stressed that she would stay “as a member of the House – speaking for the people of San Francisco, serving the great state of California, and defending our constitution.”

Pelosi’s number-two, Steny Hoyer, will also leave the House Democratic leadership as part of efforts to renew the party.

The changes at the top come while Democrats are under pressure to formulate clear policies as Democratic President Joe Biden faces significant challenges.

Republicans, who managed to recapture the House following the recent mid-term elections, have already pledged to investigate the president’s son Hunter Biden’s business ties.

They cast it as an inquiry into alleged corruption by Joe Biden, whose approval rating is already steady in negative territory amid fears of recession and social unrest.
