JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Sirens wailed in Israel at 10:00 a.m. local time Tuesday to remember at least six million Jewish people who perished in the Holocaust, also known as the Shoah in Hebrew.

The ceremonies came as Israel faced deep divisions about its path to the future, regional threats, including from nearby militants and Iran, and reports of antisemitism worldwide.

“We are one people and one people we shall remain, brought together not only by a painful history but also by our shared, hope-filled future and fate,” said Israel’s President Isaac Herzog earlier.

For the first time, Yad Vashem, Israel’s national Holocaust memorial, is partnering with the Our 6 Million organization to launch a memorial candle-lighting ceremony, organizers said.

The ceremony was due Tuesday in the Hall of Remembrance at Yad Vashem. Individuals were asked to light a candle bearing the name of a Holocaust victim before the start of the event.

Yad Vashem also urged the public to fill out “Pages of Testimony” to commemorate “every Jewish man, woman, and child murdered during the Holocaust” in World War Two.

It is part of a broader effort by Yad Vashem to preserve Holocaust-related documents, artifacts, photographs, and artworks, as well as to interview, document, and record video testimonies of survivors.
