(Worthy News) – A new study shows that, since the COVID-19 pandemic, less than half of Americans who identify as born-again Christians believe that Jesus lived a sinless life when He walked the earth 2,000 years ago, the Christian Post reports. Published in the American Worldview Inventory 2023, the study was carried out by the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University under the supervision of pollster George Barna.

The study polled 2,000 “born-again” Christians nationwide between 2020-2023 and found that just 44% now believe Jesus committed no sins when he was incarnate, compared to 58% in 2020, CP reports.

The study also found that, during the pandemic, the number of those who believe God has a unique call or purpose for their lives fell from 88% to a mere 46%, CP reports.

Moreover, the number of those who said they are deeply committed to practicing their religious faith fell from 85% to 50%, while those who said they read or study the Bible at least once a week fell from 60% to 55% during the pandemic, CP reports.

“Most religious beliefs change over the course of generations, not a few years,” Barna said in a statement about the findings. “However, we know that major life crises have the capacity to introduce substantial change quickly in the foundations of people’s faith. The pandemic was certainly a life crisis for our nation, so even though this magnitude of spiritual shift was not expected, it is feasible given the physical and psychological effects of COVID along with the economic, relational, and lifestyle effects of the government’s drastic policies.”
