Kansas passes law defining gender as person’s biological sex at birth

(Worthy News) – With support from a range of groups including the pro-choice Women’s Liberation Front, Kansas has become the first state to pass a law that specifically defines gender as a person’s biological sex at birth, NTD reports. The law will prevent men, regardless of which gender they identify as, from entering women-only spaces and restricts participation in sports according to a person’s sex at birth.

Known as the Women’s Bill of Rights, S.B. 180 was passed on April 27, when the state Legislature voted to override an earlier veto of the bill by Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, NTD reports. Kelly had argued the bill would leave the state vulnerable to lawsuits and a loss of federal funding, and would negatively affect its economy.

The new legislation defines a female as “an individual whose biological reproductive system is developed to produce ova.” It defines a male as “an individual whose biological reproductive system is developed to fertilize the ova of a female,” NTD reports.

The legislation also says that the terms “woman” and “girl” refer to human females and “man” and “boy” refer to human males, NTD reports. The law defines “mother” as a parent of the female sex and “father” as a parent of the male sex.

In a Twitter statement welcoming the legislation, the Women’s Liberation Front, which helped draft the bill, said: “This bill takes procedural steps to write into law common sense definitions that ensure the meaning of words like ‘woman’ and ‘mother’ aren’t corrupted by unelected bureaucrats intent on pushing gender ideology.”
