RALEIGH, USA (Worthy News) – The legislature of the U.S. state of North Carolina successfully overrode the governor’s veto of legislation banning most abortions after 12 weeks.

Critics said it would further restrict “abortion care” in the state, but it was a victory for demonstrators who urged the Republican-dominated House and Senate to vote “pro-life.”

While the state currently bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, the new law bans abortions after 12 weeks with exceptions for rape, incest, fetal anomalies, and if the pregnant woman’s life is at risk.

The ban is set to take effect July 1.

Late Tuesday’s vote was a setback for Democratic Governor Roy Cooper, an abortion-rights supporter. He vetoed the measure over the weekend during a rally of hundreds of abortion-rights activists and voters in Raleigh, the state capital.

Cooper had spent the last week traveling around the state to convince Republicans to uphold his veto.

Nationally, bans on abortion throughout pregnancy are in effect in 14 states after the Supreme Court overturned the “Roe V. Wade” ruling that enabled abortions nationwide.
