(Worthy News) – On Thursday, Senator Joe Manchin (D-Wva) announced that he will not seek reelection next year, relinquishing a West Virginia seat likely to be claimed by Republicans, bolstering their hopes to secure control of the Senate in 2024.

Mr. Manchin, 76, made his announcement in a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for reelection to the United States Senate, but what I will be doing is traveling the country and speaking out to see if there is an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring Americans together,” Senator Manchin said in a video statement.

The 76-year-old Democrat spent the majority of his 13 years in the Senate legislating as a centrist, political observers noted. He oftentimes restrained his party’s more liberal aspirations. However, he was facing a tough challenge politically in West Virginia as the state has become a stronghold for the GOP over the past few election cycles.

In 2020 West Virginia election, Former President Donald Trump secured 68.7% of the vote, while President Joe Biden only garnered 29.7% of the vote. Similar results carried through the governor’s and congressional races in West Virginia.

His decision is a significant setback to Democrats’ aspirations of preserving their slim one-seat majority in the Senate.
