(Worthy News) – President-elect Trump announced Thursday evening that he is nominating former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as the next U.S. Attorney General. This follows his previous nominee, Matt Gaetz, withdrawing his candidacy for the position earlier in the day.

Bondi, a Republican, served as the 37th Florida attorney general from 2011 to 2019, the first woman to hold the position. She also defended President Trump as one of his lawyers during his first impeachment trial in 2020.

“Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families,” Trump stated in his announcement. “Then, as Florida’s first female Attorney General, she worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs, and reduce the tragedy of Fentanyl Overdose Deaths, which have destroyed many families across our Country. She did such an incredible job, that I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during my first Term — We saved many lives!”

“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again,” he continued. “I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”

Gaetz withdrew his nomination as attorney general following meetings with U.S. senators, who had reservations about his candidacy due to his controversial actions in Congress, including his role in the removal of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

“I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday,” Gaetz announced his decision on X. “I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.”

Shortly after Trump’s announcement, Gaetz posted on X, praising Bondi as “a stellar selection” for attorney general by Trump.

“Pam and I worked closely together when she was Florida’s Attorney General and I chaired Criminal Justice in the state house,” he wrote. “She’s a proven litigator, an inspiring leader and a champion for all Americans. She will bring the needed reforms to DOJ.”
