EU and UK Announce Fresh Sanctions on Russia Amid Escalating War Efforts

(Worthy News) – The European Union on Tuesday formally adopted its 17th round of sanctions against Russia, targeting nearly 200 vessels in Moscow’s so-called “shadow fleet” used to circumvent restrictions on oil sales. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the measures during a meeting of foreign and defense ministers in Brussels, calling the vessels “dilapidated, uninsured, with unclear ownership.”
“The longer Russia wages war, the tougher our response,” Kallas said, adding that more sanctions are “in the works.”
In a coordinated move, the United Kingdom also unveiled a new set of sanctions targeting Russia’s military, energy, and financial sectors. The UK Foreign Office said the actions were part of “a coordinated effort to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
The British sanctions are aimed at “entities supporting Russia’s military machine, energy exports and information war,” as well as “financial institutions helping to fund” Russia’s invasion.
“Every ruble by which we cut Kremlin revenues diminishes [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s ability to sow chaos, division and disorder across the world,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.
UK Foreign Minister David Lammy called on Russia to “agree a full, unconditional ceasefire right away so there can be talks on a just and lasting peace.”
The joint announcements follow what UK officials described as the largest drone attack of the war to date, with Russia launching 273 drones on Ukrainian cities over the weekend.
