House Passes Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill,’ Sending Sweeping GOP Agenda to Senate

(Worthy News) – The House narrowly passed President Donald Trump’s sweeping legislative package early Thursday morning in a 215-214 vote, delivering a major win for Republicans and advancing key parts of Trump’s second-term agenda.

Dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill,” the measure extends Trump-era tax cuts, imposes work requirements for Medicaid and food stamps, boosts defense and border spending, and repeals portions of the Biden administration’s green energy policies. It also raises the debt ceiling by $4 trillion.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) hailed the bill as “historic,” while Trump urged the Senate to send it to his desk “AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.”

Only two Republicans opposed the bill–Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Warren Davidson (R-Ohio)–citing deficit concerns. Democrats unanimously rejected it, calling it a giveaway to the rich and a gutting of social programs.

While Republicans celebrated the bill as a blueprint for economic revival, Democrats unanimously opposed the measure, calling it an assault on the poor and a gift to the wealthy.

“This is one big, ugly bill,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who led a lengthy floor speech ahead of the vote. “It’s an assault on the economy, an assault on health care, and an assault on basic fairness.”

Key provisions include:

• Permanent tax cuts and new breaks on tips, overtime, and Social Security income.

• $150 billion in new defense funding, including $25 billion for a new missile shield.

• $46.5 billion for border security and wall construction.

• Expanded Medicaid work requirements and cost-sharing changes to SNAP.

• A quadrupled SALT deduction cap for middle-income earners in high-tax states.

High Stakes as Congress Eyes July 4 Deadline

With the national debt soaring past $36 trillion and a potential default looming by August, lawmakers face a ticking clock to finalize the bill. Both chambers must pass identical legislation before President Trump can sign it.

“This is what real leadership looks like,” said Rep. Mike Haridopolos (R-Fla.), summing up GOP enthusiasm. “We delivered on our promise to cut taxes, secure the border, and get America back on track.”

But with Democrats vowing fierce resistance in the Senate and key Republican senators expressing unease with aspects of the package, the final shape of Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” remains far from certain.

The bill now heads to the Senate, where Republicans may propose changes before a hoped-for final vote by July 4.
