(Worthy News) – The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session on Sunday to address the fallout from U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, as Russia, China, and Pakistan proposed a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire across the Middle East. The draft resolution, which also condemns attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites, stops short of naming the United States or Israel but is expected to face strong opposition from Washington.

Diplomats said the 15-member body was asked to provide comments on the resolution by Monday evening. To pass, the measure would need at least nine votes in favor and no veto from the council’s permanent members: the U.S., Britain, France, Russia, or China.

“The bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities by the United States marks a perilous turn in a region that is already reeling,” U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres warned the council. “We now risk descending into a rathole of retaliation after retaliation. We must act – immediately and decisively – to halt the fighting and return to serious, sustained negotiations on the Iran nuclear program.”

The strikes, part of what President Donald Trump called Operation Midnight Hammer, targeted key Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Trump claimed the operation “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear infrastructure in coordination with Israel, describing it as the largest Western military action against the Islamic Republic since 1979.

Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon defended the strikes, telling the council that “the United States, the leader of the free world, has removed the greatest existential threat to global security.” He criticized other nations for failing to act against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, saying, “Where were you when Iran raced toward the bomb? You were complicit. You were afraid. You were bystanders.”

Meanwhile, U.S. acting ambassador Dorothy Shea argued that the strikes were a lawful act of collective self-defense. “Operation Midnight Hammer sought to eliminate a longstanding but rapidly escalating source of global insecurity, and to aid our ally Israel consistent with the U.N. Charter,” she said, calling on the council to instead pressure Iran to end its threats against Israel and its nuclear weapons drive.

Russia’s envoy Vassily Nebenzia denounced the U.S. action as a repeat of past military interventions based on flawed justifications. “This cements our conviction that history has taught our U.S. colleagues nothing,” he said, comparing it to the lead-up to the Iraq war. China’s ambassador Fu Cong added that “peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved by the use of force,” and urged renewed diplomatic efforts.

Iran’s ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani accused Washington of turning the nuclear non-proliferation treaty into “a political weapon” and called the strikes an “unlawful act of aggression.”

While the United Kingdom sought a balanced approach, calling for restraint on all sides and a return to negotiations, Israel maintained that diplomacy had been exploited by Iran as a delaying tactic. “A nuclear Iran would have been a death sentence just as much for you as it would have been for us,” Danon told the council.

A vote on the proposed ceasefire resolution could come later this week, though any passage appears unlikely given Washington’s expected veto. The world now watches closely for Iran’s response, as tensions in the region remain at a boiling point.
