ISLAMABAD (Worthy News) – Christians in Pakistan are stepping up relief efforts for victims of catastrophic monsoon floods that have left hundreds dead, displaced more than 200,000 people, and wiped out entire villages, church leaders said Wednesday.

Priest Asif John Khokhar, Vicar General of the Diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi, said communities remain on high alert as relentless rains devastate the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where districts such as Buner, Swat, and Bajaur have suffered heavy casualties, landslides, and widespread displacement. “The situation is dire. The nation is on its knees,” Khokhar said.

The United Nations reported that as of late August, more than 800 people had been killed nationwide. Over 210,000 people were displaced, and villages near the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers were evacuated as waters rose.

Punjab province has been especially hard-hit, with authorities ordering the evacuation of more than 150,000 residents after India released water from dams, compounding flooding in the region.

Amid the crisis, Christian communities — through charity Caritas and local parishes — have opened shelters and distributed food and aid to both Christian and Muslim victims. Khokhar said many priests remain stranded in mountainous areas without power or phone service but continue relief efforts in life-threatening conditions.

In the city of Lahore, Catholic priest Francis Gulzar said churches, schools, and parishes have become sanctuaries. “It makes no difference — we are here to help suffering, impoverished, and desperate humanity,” he said.

The relief comes as Christians in Pakistan, a predominantly Muslim nation, increasingly report persecution, including violent attacks on churches. Their effort/, shows that despite their vulnerability, Christians remain committed to serving all those in need, church leaders suggested.
