QUEBEC CITY, Canada (Worthy News) – Women who undergo abortions face more than double the risk of psychiatric, substance-related, and suicide-related hospitalizations compared to women who give birth, according to new Canadian research.

The study, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, examined data from 28,721 women who had abortions and 1,228,807 women who gave birth in Quebec between 2006 and 2022. Researchers concluded that “abortion was strongly associated with mental health hospitalization within five years,” including admissions for psychiatric disorders, substance use, and suicide attempts.

Findings Show Significant Gaps

The study found that women who had abortions required mental health services at a rate of 104 per 10,000 per year, compared with 42 per 10,000 for women who gave birth. The disparity was most pronounced in the five years immediately following an abortion, though it narrowed over time, taking approximately 17 years before risks resembled those of women who carried pregnancies to term.

Subgroup analysis revealed that women under age 25 and those with preexisting psychiatric conditions were especially vulnerable. Among abortion patients, 14.7 per 10,000 were hospitalized after a suicide attempt, while 56.7 per 10,000 were admitted for substance use disorders. In contrast, women who gave birth had significantly lower rates: 15 per 10,000 for substance use and 37.1 per 10,000 for psychiatric hospitalizations.

While emphasizing that the data does not prove causation, researchers noted that abortion may serve as a “marker of an increased lifetime risk of mental disorders.” They recommended that women seeking abortions be screened for underlying psychological or social vulnerabilities in order to provide timely support.

The study, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Quebec Health Research Fund, also found that women with existing children faced greater post-abortion hospitalization risks than women without prior live births.

The Mystery of the Feasts and the Gift of Life

Beyond the medical data, the Bible presents a profound perspective on the value of life. Scripture declares that every child is a gift from God. Remarkably, recent insights reveal that the Biblical feasts parallel the gestation cycle of a baby–an echo of divine design hidden in plain sight.

• Passover (14th day, 1st month): Jews place an egg on the Passover table, symbolizing new life. Medical fact: on the 14th day of the first month, a mother’s egg appears.

• Unleavened Bread (15th day): Fertilization must occur within 24 hours or the process will fail.

• Firstfruits (2-6 days later): The fertilized egg travels down the fallopian tube before implanting–the “planting of seed.”

• Pentecost (50 days later): Celebrates the birth of the Church. Medical fact: on the 50th day, the embryo becomes a human fetus.

• Day of Atonement (10th day, 7th month): Blood enters the Holy of Holies. Medical fact: on this day, bone marrow takes over blood cell production–the inner sanctum of the baby’s body.

• Tabernacles (15th day, 7th month): Celebrates God breathing life into Adam. Medical fact: by this point, a baby is capable of breathing air.

• Dedication (80 days later): The child is fully developed and can be presented before the Lord.

This breathtaking alignment underscores that life in the womb reflects God’s timetable and handiwork—just as the Canadian study revealed that abortion carries profound consequences for mental, emotional, and spiritual health, doubling the risk of psychiatric, substance-related, and suicide-related hospitalizations. The feasts remind us that from conception to birth, every stage of development is divinely ordered, testifying that every child is a gift from God.
