KYIV/BUDAPESTV (Worthy News) – Ukraine says Russia’s military has bombarded the southern city of Zaporizhzhia with rockets overnight, killing one person and wounding 13 people, including two children, while another person died and several were injured elsewhere in the country.

The latest attack prompted President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to urge European leaders to build a continent-wide air defense umbrella — while pressing U.S. President Donald J. Trump to take a clear stand on sanctions against Russia.

In Zaporizhzhia, the Russian barrage struck more than 20 apartment buildings, setting homes ablaze as rescue workers searched for survivors.

Regional head Ivan Fedorov said the strike came as the city was still recovering from earlier bombardments, leaving local services overwhelmed.

Zaporizhzhia resident Oleksii, 35, recalled his narrow escape. “I heard some distant explosions, very far away, so we went to sleep. “And then there was a super strong explosion which blew out our windows. I immediately went outside and ran to my neighbours to extinguish the fire. I was so worried about them,” he said.

ATTACKS ACROSS UKRAINE

Officials said Russian forces launched more than 100 drones and 150 glide bombs overnight.

At least one person died in the southern Mykolaiv region, several were injured in Kharkiv, and a retail logistics centre was destroyed near Kyiv, according to authorities.

Zelenskyy warned the ongoing aerial terror underscored the need for a European-wide “air defense umbrella.”

He also appealed to Trump to back tougher sanctions and provide security guarantees, calling it the “missing piece” for peace talks.

However, Trump has linked further sanctions to NATO military alliance allies imposing steep tariffs on Chinese imports.

NORD STREAM

He also condemned countries still buying Russian energy, a warning that could affect European nations such as Hungary and Slovakia, which remain dependent on Moscow.

Separately, in Italy, a court ruled that a Ukrainian man arrested over the 2022 sabotage of Russia’s Nord Stream natural gas pipelines must be extradited to Germany.

The suspect, identified as Serhii K., denies involvement and plans to appeal to Italy’s Supreme Court.
