(Worthy News) – President Donald J. Trump is moving to reshape the U.S. Navy under a bold new initiative called the “Golden Fleet,” an ambitious effort to build a next-generation maritime force designed to counter China and other emerging global threats.

According to senior White House and Navy officials cited by The Wall Street Journal, the “Golden Fleet” would replace much of the Navy’s existing surface force with a modernized mix of heavily armed warships and smaller, agile vessels supported by unmanned systems.

Trump, who has long criticized the appearance and capabilities of current U.S. warships, is personally involved in the design discussions and has held multiple meetings with Navy leaders.

“The reason we went to battleships in World War II was to get to that longer-range cannon,” said retired Navy officer Bryan Clark, now a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute and part of the advisory group. “In the missile age, this is what we need for longer range–it’s these big missiles. So this battleship of tomorrow is going to be this thing that carries really long-range missiles.”

The concept envisions large, heavily armored ships weighing up to 20,000 tons–potentially armed with hypersonic missiles–and smaller corvettes designed for high-speed maneuvers and short-range defense.

The new project follows Trump’s previous initiatives such as the “Golden Dome” missile defense system and “Gold Card” immigration plan, reflecting his branding of major national programs.

White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said Trump has done “more than anyone to bolster America’s maritime dominance,” highlighting a $43 billion investment in shipbuilding and the establishment of a White House Office of Shipbuilding.

From Steel to Strategy

Trump’s fascination with ship design dates back to his first term, when he called for a return to steam-powered aircraft carrier catapults and criticized the sleek look of Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. He also pushed for modifications to the Constellation-class frigate, insisting that future ships appear “stronger” and more “American.”

Experts remain divided over the necessity of super-large surface warships in modern naval strategy. Mark Montgomery, a retired naval officer with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, warned that the president’s personal aesthetic preferences shouldn’t guide tactical planning.

“I’m all for a dramatic reimagining of the fleet,” Montgomery said, “but I’m not sure super large surface combatants are the right answer.”

Toward an Autonomous “Hellscape”

Under the “Golden Fleet” concept, the Navy would shift from aiming for a set number of ships to fielding roughly 280-300 crewed vessels supported by large numbers of unmanned or autonomous systems–robotic ships and submarines capable of filling operational gaps during crises.

Adm. Samuel Paparo, head of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, has proposed a related “Hellscape” strategy to deploy thousands of unmanned platforms to saturate waters around Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.

Analysts say the Golden Fleet aligns with the Navy’s current assessment that future warfare will rely on both massive, long-range strike platforms and smaller, distributed assets.

“What’s fortuitous is that our own analysis and the president’s intuition are aligning,” said Clark. “It not only fulfills the broader vision the president has, but also delivers the capabilities the Navy needs for the future operating environment.”

Challenges Ahead

While the initiative underscores Trump’s emphasis on maritime dominance, analysts caution that revitalizing America’s shipbuilding capacity will require major long-term investment.

A single next-generation battleship could take up to a decade to design and build. However, smaller corvettes could be developed faster–potentially through foreign partnerships, such as adapting Israel’s Sa’ar 6-class corvettes.

Trump has repeatedly vowed to rebuild the Navy to “unmatched strength,” promising to ensure that “America’s ships will once again rule the seas.”

The “Golden Fleet” may become one of the defining military legacies of his presidency–combining symbolism, strength, and a return to the steel-heavy naval power that once defined the United States.
