NUNSPEET, NETHERLANDS (Worthy News) – The Netherlands remained on edge Tuesday after a car drove into a crowd of people waiting to watch a Christmas parade in the eastern Dutch town of Nunspeet, injuring numerous people at a time when Europe has faced several threats against holiday events.

Dutch police said at least nine people were injured, some seriously, adding that the incident did not “immediately appear to be deliberate.”

Authorities in the eastern province of Gelderland said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

CHRISTMAS PARADE HALTED AFTER CRASH

Witnesses said people had been waiting to watch a parade of vehicles decorated with Christmas lights — known locally as the Lights Tour — when the car struck the crowd. Nunspeet is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Amsterdam.

The nearby municipality of Elburg confirmed on social media that the parade was immediately halted.

“What should have been a moment of solidarity ends in great worry and sadness,” Elburg Mayor Jan Nathan Rozendaal said in a statement.

MAYOR SAYS IMPACT FELT IN COMMUNITY

Nunspeet Mayor Céline Blom said the impact of the incident was deeply felt across the community.

“Everyone in Nunspeet knows someone who was involved in the accident,” she explained. “The impact of the tragedy during the Lights Tour is enormous.”

The municipality announced it would organize an additional support meeting together with Dutch Victim Support services and youth doctors for bystanders and families affected by the incident.

DRIVER DETAINED AMID INVESTIGATION

Police said the driver was a 56-year-old woman from Nunspeet, who sustained minor injuries.

She was detained, authorities said, “as is usual in a serious traffic accident.” No further details were released.

Video footage from the scene showed emergency responders surrounding a small damaged car in a field, with its hood open, as ambulances and police vehicles remained on site.

HEIGHTENED CONCERNS AFTER THREATS

The incident came amid heightened concern across Europe following multiple threats against Christmas markets and holiday gatherings, some of which have been disrupted by protests or security alerts.

Over the weekend, Germany marked the first anniversary of a deadly car-ramming attack at a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg.

That December 20 attack killed six people and wounded more than 300 others, some of whom had planned to return home to prepare a Christmas dinner table after celebrating the season at the market.

Authorities across Europe have since increased security around Christmas events amid ongoing safety concerns.
