NEW DELHI (Worthy News) – A virus far deadlier than the coronavirus has resurfaced in India, with health officials confirming two cases of the highly lethal Nipah virus. The cases prompted authorities to rush to prevent it from spreading to other nations and, potentially, beyond the continent.

Infections were reported in the eastern state of West Bengal, where the Indian government said extensive containment measures were underway.

Officials said the outbreak has so far remained limited, with 196 contacts traced and tested, all of whom are asymptomatic and negative for the virus.

The confirmed patients, both healthcare workers at the same hospital, were placed in isolation as part of intensified surveillance, laboratory testing, and field investigations, according to health authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Several neighboring countries have moved quickly to strengthen screening procedures for travelers arriving from India. Thailand and Malaysia have stepped up airport checks, including health declarations and enhanced monitoring at international entry points.

DEADLY VIRUS WITH NO VACCINE

Nepal has also begun screening arriving passengers at Kathmandu’s airport and at border crossings with India, while other Asian nations have reviewed preparedness measures.

Nipah is a zoonotic virus transmitted mainly from fruit bats to humans, though it can also spread through contact with infected animals, contaminated food, or, in rare cases, between people.

The disease can cause symptoms ranging from fever and respiratory illness to fatal encephalitis, and past outbreaks have shown a high fatality rate of between 40 and 75 percent.

There is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

The WHO classifies Nipah as a priority pathogen because of its potential to trigger an epidemic if not rapidly contained.

SEVERAL COUNTRIES BOLSTER SCREENING

Countries across South and Southeast Asia are bolstering health screening at airports, ports, and land crossings.

Authorities are also urging the public to avoid contact with bats and to refrain from consuming potentially contaminated foods linked to zoonotic transmission.

Despite heightened concern, European health agencies have assessed the risk to travelers outside the region as very low at this stage, given the limited number of cases and containment efforts in India.

Indian health officials, working with state authorities, have activated outbreak response teams and risk communication campaigns to educate communities about symptoms and preventive steps.

Worthy News will continue providing updates as authorities work to ensure the virus remains contained and does not spread further across Asia or beyond.
