Tech Giants Join Trump to Sign ‘Ratepayer Protection Pledge’ on AI Data Center Power Costs

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump met Wednesday with leaders of major technology companies at the White House as they formally backed a new initiative designed to prevent the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers from driving up electricity prices for American consumers.

Executives from Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, xAI, OpenAI, and Amazon joined Trump to sign the “Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” committing their companies to shoulder more of the infrastructure and electricity costs associated with operating power-hungry AI facilities rather than passing those expenses on to households and small businesses.

The agreement requires participating companies to secure or finance electricity supplies for their data centers — including building new generation capacity or expanding output from existing power plants — while also funding upgrades to power transmission systems needed to support the growing AI infrastructure.

The pledge also includes commitments from tech firms to hire and train workers from the communities where new data centers are built and operated.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the initiative will help keep electricity affordable while strengthening America’s technological leadership.

“The ratepayer protection pledge will deliver more affordable, reliable, and secure energy for the American people while ensuring the United States wins the AI race,” Wright said. “We will continue partnering with technology leaders to strengthen America’s competitive edge while keeping energy costs low for hardworking families.”

Technology executives broadly welcomed the initiative, describing it as a way to balance rapid AI expansion with protections for consumers and local communities.

Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman said the pledge establishes “a clear baseline to protect ratepayers while enabling responsible, long-term energy partnerships that strengthen the grid and the communities where data centers operate.”

Microsoft Vice Chair Brad Smith similarly called the pledge “an important step” to ensure data centers do not contribute to rising electricity prices.

Meta President Dina Powell McCormick described the surge in AI infrastructure investment as the “biggest infrastructure boom since World War II,” saying the agreement helps ensure that “American AI dominance and the prosperity of American families go hand in hand.”

The White House has framed the initiative as part of a broader effort to balance technological competitiveness with rising concerns about energy affordability as billions of dollars flow into new AI computing capacity across the United States.
