(Worthy News) – Authorities say a suspect allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” before throwing an improvised explosive device during a protest near Gracie Mansion, triggering a major investigation involving federal and local law enforcement.

The incident occurred Saturday near East End Avenue and East 87th Street outside the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The protest was organized by conservative activist Jake Lang to oppose public Muslim prayer, drawing about 20 participants. More than 100 counterprotesters gathered nearby.

According to federal law enforcement sources cited by Fox News, an 18-year-old counterprotester allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” before igniting and throwing a homemade explosive device toward the crowd. Authorities say the suspect then retrieved a second device from a 19-year-old accomplice, lit it, and attempted to flee before both were arrested.

The suspects were identified as Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19. Officials said at least one of the devices has been confirmed as an improvised explosive device (IED) capable of causing “serious injury or death.”

Investigators believe the explosives may have contained TATP (triacetone triperoxide), a highly unstable and powerful compound often associated with terrorist attacks. Retired NYPD inspector Paul Mauro said the material is “very hard to detect, very powerful, and extremely unstable,” noting it is not typically produced by inexperienced individuals.

The NYPD Bomb Squad rendered two of the devices safe and will send them to Quantico for further forensic analysis. Police also recovered a third suspicious device inside a vehicle on East End Avenue between 81st and 82nd streets on Sunday, prompting the temporary evacuation of nearby buildings before the object was removed for testing.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting the investigation as authorities work to determine how the explosives were constructed and whether others may be involved. No injuries were reported during the confrontation.
