Pentagon Weighs Counter-Drone Laser Deployment in Washington Amid Rising Security Concerns

(Worthy News) – The Pentagon is considering deploying a high-energy counter-drone laser system at Fort Lesley J. McNair, signaling growing concern over unexplained drone activity near sensitive U.S. government sites.

According to reporting by The New York Times, the potential deployment comes after multiple drone sightings near the installation, which houses senior officials including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

U.S. Army officials confirmed increased vigilance in the area. Heather Chairez, spokeswoman for Joint Task Force-National Capital Region, said authorities are aware of the sightings and have expanded counter-drone measures, though no credible threat has been identified.

The proposed deployment, however, raises significant safety questions. Fort McNair sits within the tightly controlled airspace near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, where any use of high-energy systems must be carefully coordinated to avoid risks to civilian aircraft.

Recent incidents have highlighted the challenges of implementing such technology. In one case, a laser system engaged what was later identified as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection drone near Fort Hancock, Texas. In another, a suspected aerial threat near Fort Bliss—later revealed to be a party balloon—prompted a temporary shutdown of nearby airspace.

To address these concerns, the Pentagon has partnered with the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct testing in New Mexico, evaluating how laser systems interact with aircraft materials and ensuring safeguards are in place.

FAA officials emphasized the importance of maintaining aviation safety while responding to emerging threats, noting ongoing coordination with defense agencies.

The deliberations come as drone sightings have increased across major U.S. cities and military installations over the past year, raising fresh concerns about homeland security and the evolving nature of aerial threats.
