(Worthy News) – The United States is preparing to significantly expand its maritime pressure campaign against Iran, with plans underway to board and seize Iran-linked oil tankers and commercial vessels in international waters, U.S. officials told the Wall Street Journal.

The move comes as tensions intensify around the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian forces have tightened control and reportedly attacked several commercial ships. The developments have unsettled global shipping markets, especially after Iran’s foreign minister claimed the waterway was fully open—an announcement welcomed by Donald Trump.

The expanded naval operations are part of a broader Trump administration strategy known as “Economic Fury,” aimed at forcing Tehran to reopen the strait and make concessions on its nuclear program. Under this approach, U.S. forces may intercept and board Iranian-flagged vessels worldwide, including so-called “dark fleet” tankers that evade sanctions and regulations.

Ships suspected of transporting oil or arms in support of Iran could also be seized. Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine said the U.S. would actively pursue any vessel providing material support to Iran, signaling a sweeping enforcement posture. U.S. Central Command has already turned back 23 ships attempting to leave Iranian ports as part of a growing naval blockade.

The escalation comes amid fragile negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. President Trump has stated that Iran agreed to hand over its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, though Tehran has rejected the claim. Key issues remain unresolved, including how long Iran would halt uranium enrichment, whether it would regain access to billions in frozen assets, and how any agreement would be verified and enforced. Recent talks held in Pakistan ended without a breakthrough, and no new round of negotiations has yet been scheduled.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials stress that American forces are prepared if conflict resumes, though there is clear reluctance to engage in a broader war. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said U.S. forces are “maximally postured,” but the administration appears focused on avoiding ground operations. Concerns remain that escalation could prompt Iran to retaliate against energy infrastructure across the region, potentially disrupting global oil supplies. Although Iran retains thousands of missiles, officials say its defense industry has been heavily damaged, limiting its ability to quickly replenish its arsenal.

The crackdown is also targeting Iran’s oil exports, which total roughly 1.6 million barrels per day and are largely shipped to China’s independent refineries. The U.S. Treasury Department has expanded sanctions on vessels, companies, and individuals tied to Iran’s illicit oil trade. Legal enforcement is increasing as well, with U.S. prosecutors warning they will pursue those involved in buying or selling sanctioned Iranian oil.

Experts describe the administration’s strategy as a “maximalist approach,” using every available legal and economic tool to pressure Tehran in an effort to force concessions and ultimately bring the conflict to an end.
