WASHINGTON D.C. (Worthy News) – House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that House Republicans are preparing a new bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as a prolonged funding standoff with Democrats continues to impact key immigration enforcement agencies.

The DHS has been partially shut down since February 14, with Democrats opposing legislation that includes funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The impasse has raised growing concerns among Republican leaders about national security and border enforcement.

Johnson criticized a Senate-backed funding proposal, arguing that it contains “problematic language” that could weaken immigration enforcement efforts. While Senate Republicans have moved to advance funding through the reconciliation process, Johnson emphasized that the House will introduce a revised version designed to better support border security priorities.

“We have to make sure that immigration law is enforced, and the border is safe and secure,” Johnson said, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

The debate comes amid heightened tensions in Washington following a recent security incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Some Republican lawmakers are now calling for more aggressive action to break the legislative gridlock, including eliminating the Senate filibuster to ensure DHS funding moves forward.

Sen. Ron Johnson said the current moment demands decisive leadership. “At a moment of national danger, if Democrats refuse to fund DHS, this would be the time to nuke the filibuster for good,” he said during a television interview.

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin warned that emergency funding to pay DHS personnel could be exhausted by the end of April, adding urgency to the negotiations.

President Donald Trump also weighed in, urging Republicans to unite behind a Senate-passed budget blueprint that would fund ICE and CBP through reconciliation, bypassing Democratic opposition.

“The Radical Left Democrats have kept DHS shut down since February 14th,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We need all Republicans to join together and support this Budget Blueprint… and fund Immigration Enforcement with only Republican votes.”

Trump called for swift action, setting a June 1 deadline to deliver a final bill to his desk, emphasizing the importance of supporting law enforcement personnel tasked with protecting the nation’s borders.

As negotiations continue, the outcome of this legislative battle will play a critical role in shaping U.S. immigration enforcement and national security policy in the months ahead.
