(Worthy News) – Tensions along Israel’s northern border surged Thursday after a deadly series of drone attacks by Hezbollah left one Israeli soldier dead and at least 15 others wounded, marking a sharp escalation despite a fragile U.S.-brokered ceasefire.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Sgt. Liem Ben Hamo, 19, of the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion, was killed when an explosive drone struck near troops operating in the southern Lebanese village of Qantara. Another soldier was moderately wounded in the same incident. The military said one drone was intercepted, while a second struck near the forces.

In a separate but nearly simultaneous attack, another Hezbollah drone struck an artillery position near the northern Israeli community of Shomera, igniting a military cargo vehicle and triggering secondary explosions. Twelve soldiers were wounded in that strike, including two moderately. Hezbollah later claimed responsibility for targeting Israeli armored assets in both incidents.

Additional drone strikes were reported in the town of Bint Jbeil, where two Israeli personnel — including a female officer — were moderately injured. The IDF noted that Hezbollah has increasingly deployed advanced drones, some believed to be guided by fiber optic systems resistant to electronic jamming.

Sirens sounded across multiple northern Israeli communities, sending residents into shelters as interceptor missiles engaged incoming aerial threats. The military said most drones were intercepted, though some impacts were confirmed.

Israel responded with a wave of airstrikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure across southern Lebanon, including operational buildings and rocket-launching positions. The IDF said five Hezbollah operatives were killed in earlier strikes and that additional combat positions were destroyed during ground operations near Mount Dov.

Lebanon’s health ministry reported that Israeli strikes killed nine people, including women and children, drawing condemnation from Lebanese officials. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of violating the ceasefire and called for international intervention.

Israel maintains that its actions are defensive. “These are further violations of the ceasefire understandings by the Hezbollah terror organization,” the IDF stated, emphasizing its right to respond to immediate threats.

The ceasefire, brokered by the United States and announced by President Donald Trump earlier this month, is increasingly unraveling. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir stated this week, “There is no ceasefire,” underscoring the deteriorating security situation.
