Jewish New Yorkers Remain Primary Target of Hate Crimes Despite Overall Decline, NYPD Reports
by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief
(Worthy News) – New York City’s latest crime data reveals a troubling trend: while overall hate crimes have declined, Jewish residents continue to bear the overwhelming brunt of these offenses.
According to the New York City Police Department, Jewish New Yorkers were targeted in 59 percent of all confirmed hate crimes in April. Of the 50 confirmed hate crimes recorded, 30 were anti-Jewish incidents. Notably, there were no confirmed anti-Muslim hate crimes during the same period.
While the figures mark a significant decrease from April 2025—when 43 anti-Jewish incidents were confirmed—the proportion remains strikingly high. Jewish individuals were also the victims in 38 of the 65 reported hate crimes in April, representing 58 percent of reported cases. By comparison, only one reported incident targeted Muslims.
The data follows a similar pattern from March, when Jews were the victims in 58 percent of confirmed hate crimes. Despite a slight drop in total incidents, the likelihood of Jewish individuals being targeted actually increased marginally in April.
The findings come amid ongoing political debate in the city. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a vocal critic of Israel, has frequently raised concerns about Islamophobia. However, the NYPD’s data indicates that anti-Jewish incidents continue to dominate the hate crime landscape in New York City.
At the same time, the city is seeing historic improvements in overall public safety. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch credited “precision policing” strategies for the broader decline in crime, including targeted efforts against illegal firearms and violent gangs.
The department reported that New York City recorded the lowest number of murders in its history during the first four months of the year, with 76 homicides—surpassing the previous record of 86 set in 2018. April alone saw just 19 murders, another historic low.
“These results are made possible by the women and men of the NYPD carrying out that work with focus and discipline,” Tisch said, emphasizing that the department’s approach will continue in the months ahead.
Yet even as overall crime trends improve, the disproportionate targeting of Jewish residents underscores an ongoing concern—one that city leaders and communities alike are being pressed not to overlook.
Prophetic Perspective
The rise of antisemitism we are witnessing is not merely political or social—it carries deep prophetic implications. In Jeremiah 16:16, the Lord declares, “Behold, I will send for many fishers… and after will I send for many hunters.” Historically, this passage has been understood as a dual process: first drawing the Jewish people back to their homeland, and then allowing persecution to drive them as well.
The troubling increase in hostility toward Jewish people worldwide may reflect this “hunter” phase—a sobering reminder that God’s prophetic timeline is advancing. Yet even in this, there is hope: the same God who allows pressure also promises restoration, regathering, and ultimately redemption. These events should awaken both vigilance and faith, pointing to the unfolding purposes of God in our time.
