(Worthy News) – A new report from NBC Newsclaims that President Donald Trump was forced to pause the U.S. military’s “Project Freedom” operation in the Strait of Hormuz after pressure from Saudi Arabia and Gulf allies threatened critical American military access in the region.

According to NBC, citing two U.S. officials, Saudi leaders refused to allow American military aircraft to fly from Prince Sultan Airbase or through Saudi airspace in support of the mission, which was designed to help guide commercial vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions with Iran.

The report said the Trump administration launched “Project Freedom” after attacks on shipping lanes and rising fears that the strategic waterway could effectively become blocked during the conflict between the United States and Iran. Military aircraft reportedly provided a defensive umbrella for ships attempting to exit the strait safely.

However, Saudi Arabia’s refusal reportedly left Washington with few alternatives. One U.S. official told NBC that regional geography makes Gulf cooperation essential, saying that in some cases allied airspace is “the only option” for conducting military operations.

Trump reportedly attempted to personally resolve the dispute during a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, but the effort failed. The report said the president ultimately halted the operation in order to preserve broader U.S. military access to strategically important Saudi-controlled airspace.

The development signals growing caution among Gulf Arab nations as fears intensify that the conflict with Iran could spiral into a broader regional war. While Saudi Arabia reportedly opposed the escort operation, a Saudi source told NBC that Riyadh remains supportive of diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan aimed at helping broker an end to the conflict between Washington and Tehran.

The report also revealed signs of frustration among regional allies over how quickly the operation was announced. A Middle Eastern diplomat told NBC that the United States informed Oman only after publicly unveiling the mission. Despite that, the diplomat said Omani officials were “not upset or angry.”

The White House disputed suggestions that allies were caught off guard, insisting that regional partners had been informed in advance.

The pause in Project Freedom comes as the temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran remains fragile, with tensions throughout the Gulf still running dangerously high after weeks of missile attacks, naval threats, and disruptions to global oil shipments.
