Trump-Backed Gallrein Defeats Rep. Thomas Massie In Kentucky GOP Primary

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump scored another major victory in his effort to reshape the Republican Party Tuesday night as Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie lost his primary to Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein in the state’s 4th Congressional District.

The Associated Press called the race for Gallrein, a Kentucky farmer and former Navy SEAL officer, after he defeated Massie in one of the most closely watched Republican primaries of the 2026 election cycle. With an estimated 72% of the vote counted, Gallrein led Massie 54.4% to 45.6%, according to early reported results.

The result ends Massie’s decade-long career in the House and sends a clear message to Republicans that President Trump remains the dominant force inside the GOP. Trump personally recruited and endorsed Gallrein after repeatedly clashing with Massie over spending, foreign policy, the Iran war, and the release of Justice Department files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Gallrein thanked Trump in his victory remarks and credited Kentucky Republicans for the win.

“God is good,” Gallrein told supporters, saying the victory belonged to “the Republicans of Kentucky District 4 and their families,” whom he pledged to champion in Washington.

Massie, a libertarian-leaning Republican known for bucking his own party on budget bills and foreign entanglements, remained defiant in defeat. He has built a loyal following among younger voters and Republicans skeptical of overseas spending, U.S. involvement in foreign wars, and Washington’s bipartisan establishment.

The primary became a proxy battle over the future direction of the Republican Party. Gallrein ran as a strong Trump ally and supporter of Israel, while Massie leaned heavily into his independent streak, opposition to foreign aid, and criticism of U.S. involvement in the Iran conflict.

Trump and his allies poured substantial political muscle into the race. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth campaigned for Gallrein on the eve of the primary, while Trump repeatedly attacked Massie as disloyal and unreliable. The race also drew major spending from Trump-aligned and pro-Israel political groups, making it one of the most expensive House primaries in U.S. history.

Massie’s defeat follows other Trump-backed efforts to remove Republican lawmakers viewed as insufficiently loyal to the president’s agenda. Trump-endorsed candidates have recently prevailed in Kentucky’s Senate primary, Louisiana’s Republican contests, and Indiana state legislative races, reinforcing his ability to punish GOP dissenters and reward loyalists.

The Kentucky result also comes as Republicans face a difficult midterm map. Some GOP candidates in swing districts may seek distance from Trump on issues such as tariffs, the Iran war, and rising fuel prices, while others will likely lean further into the president’s endorsement as the clearest path through Republican primaries.

For now, Tuesday’s outcome leaves little doubt: in much of the Republican Party, Trump’s backing remains a powerful political blessing — and crossing him can carry a steep cost.
