Christian Church Leaders Killed In India’s Manipur State Amid Escalating Violence

NEW DELHI (Worthy News) – Investigations were ongoing Sunday into the killing of three senior Kuki-Thadou Christian church leaders by unidentified gunmen in India’s northeastern Manipur State, Christian investigators told Worthy News.

The May 13 killings in the state’s Kangpokpi District triggered retaliatory abductions and a hostage crisis involving civilians from both Kuki and Naga communities, according to advocacy group Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW).

Christians said the three church leaders had been traveling with a larger group in two vehicles while returning from the United Baptist Convention Assembly 2026 held in Churachandpur District, which reportedly focused on reconciliation and peacebuilding among tribal communities in Manipur.

Unidentified armed men reportedly opened fire on the convoy as it traveled through a hilly stretch between Kotzim and Kotlen near Saheibung Peak in Kangpokpi District.

Reverends Vumthang Sitlhou, Kaigoulun Lhouvum, and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou were killed instantly, while at least five others suffered life-threatening gunshot injuries and were taken to a hospital in Imphal, Christians said.

CHRISTIAN LEADERS TARGETED

Authorities had not publicly identified the attackers by Sunday, and investigations remained ongoing.

The killings caused particular concern because the victims were Christian religious leaders returning from a church gathering dedicated to peace and reconciliation efforts.

Reverend Vumthang Sitlhou was widely known as a respected Baptist leader involved in reconciliation efforts between tribal Christian communities in Manipur.

Christian investigators said his killing raised serious concerns about the safety of clergy and faith leaders working in conflict areas.

After the attack, shutdowns and protests were reported in several Kuki-Zo areas, especially in Kangpokpi District, while movement along highways in the hill districts was disrupted.

HOSTAGE CRISIS IN MANIPUR

Within hours of the killings, retaliatory abductions reportedly began in several areas.

Subsequent reports alleged that Naga civilians were abducted by armed Kuki groups, while Kuki civilians were detained or abducted by Naga village volunteers and armed groups in retaliation.

The crisis later developed into hostage negotiations involving church leaders, tribal organizations, civil society groups, local authorities, and security agencies.

By May 16, several hostages had reportedly been released, including 14 Naga civilians and 14 Kuki civilians.

However, protests continued over reports that 14 Kuki and six Naga hostages remained missing, raising fears among relatives and community leaders that some may no longer be alive.

CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION CONCERNS

CSW Founder President Mervyn Thomas condemned the killings, calling them “a horrific assault on human life and the freedom of religion or belief in Manipur.”

He urged authorities to conduct “a swift, thorough and transparent investigation” and called for the immediate release of all remaining civilian hostages.

The violence has highlighted ongoing instability in Manipur, where ethnic tensions and armed clashes have intensified since 2023, mainly involving Kuki, Meitei, and increasingly Naga communities.

India ranks 12th on the 2026 Open Doors World Watch List of countries where Christians face persecution and discrimination.

Open Doors says Christians in India have increasingly faced attacks from Hindu nationalist extremists, including assaults on churches, arrests under anti-conversion laws, mob violence, and intimidation of pastors and believers, particularly in rural and tribal regions.
