Paxton Ousts Cornyn in Texas Runoff, Signaling Trump’s GOP Has Tightened Its Grip

(Worthy News) – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton decisively defeated four-term incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in Tuesday’s Republican Senate primary runoff, delivering one of the clearest signs yet that President Donald Trump’s GOP is rapidly replacing the party’s old guard with candidates aligned more closely with the MAGA movement.
Paxton led Cornyn by roughly a 63% to 37% margin with most votes counted, according to reported results, after Trump’s late endorsement helped turn an already difficult race for Cornyn into a political rout. The Associated Press described the result as a major victory for Trump’s continued influence over Republican voters.
“Tonight we just sent a Texas-sized message to Washington,” Paxton told supporters. “Today, change was on the ballot and change won.”
Cornyn, who has held the Senate seat since 2002 and was widely viewed as part of the Republican establishment, conceded the race and said he would respect the decision of Texas voters. His defeat comes amid a broader reshaping of the Senate GOP, as Trump-backed candidates continue challenging Republicans viewed by the party’s base as insufficiently aligned with the president’s agenda.
Paxton, a longtime Trump ally, praised the president’s endorsement as decisive, calling Trump’s backing “the most powerful force in politics.” Trump endorsed Paxton on May 19, calling him the stronger conservative choice in the runoff.
The victory sets up a November battle against Democrat James Talarico, a Texas state lawmaker whom Paxton immediately portrayed as a radical threat to the state’s conservative values. Democrats, meanwhile, are expected to pour significant resources into the race, arguing Paxton’s past controversies could make the seat competitive despite Texas’ Republican lean.
Paxton is campaigning on his record as Texas attorney general, including more than 100 lawsuits against the Biden administration, his opposition to the “woke” agenda, border security, lower taxes, and support for Trump’s second-term agenda.
Analysts said the runoff was more than a Texas political earthquake — it was a warning shot to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the Republican old guard. In Trump’s GOP, seniority alone no longer guarantees survival. The base is demanding loyalty, urgency, and results, and Paxton’s victory showed that Republicans seen as too slow, too cautious, or too tied to Washington’s establishment may face serious consequences.
