(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Iran shot down a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, vowing that the United States would respond to what he described as a direct attack on American forces.
“I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”
U.S. Central Command said the helicopter went down near the coast of Oman while conducting patrols in regional waters. Both crew members were rescued within about two hours and were reported to be in stable condition.
The incident comes at a volatile moment in the Middle East, where Washington has been pursuing a fragile diplomatic track with Tehran while Iran continues exchanging fire with Israel. Iran had recently framed its attacks on Israel as retaliation for Israeli operations in Lebanon, warning that continued military action there could bring “far more severe” measures.
Trump’s vow to respond now threatens to complicate negotiations that he had described only hours earlier as nearing a possible breakthrough. The president said he preferred a signed agreement over further bloodshed but made clear that the United States would not ignore an attack on its military personnel.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi later warned that foreign forces operating near Iranian territory were “at constant risk” and urged them to leave the region “as soon as possible,” while asserting that the Strait of Hormuz is shared by Iran and Oman.
The rescue operation reportedly involved a U.S. Navy Corsair unmanned surface vessel, assigned to Task Force 59, which reached the downed crew before they were transferred to a rescue helicopter.
The downing of the Apache could become a defining test of whether Trump can preserve diplomacy with Iran while also maintaining American deterrence in one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
