JERUSALEM/TEHRAN (Worthy News) – Tehran warned Wednesday it would “reassess” its participation in peace talks with the United States after President Donald J. Trump said Iran would have to “pay the price” as the two nations traded fire overnight.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei said the U.S. strikes endangered efforts to transform the fragile ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement.

“Following overnight events, we need to reassess,” Baqaei said. “Any diplomatic process requires a minimum stable environment.”

The United States launched strikes against Iran early Wednesday in retaliation for what it said was Iran’s downing of a U.S. Army helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.

The exchange marked the most serious escalation since a ceasefire was reached in April following weeks of conflict involving the United States, Iran, and Israel.

TALKS IN DOUBT

Trump accused Iran of delaying negotiations and suggested further military action remained possible.

In comments and social media posts, the U.S. president said Iran’s military capabilities had been severely degraded and warned Tehran would face additional consequences if it failed to reach an agreement.

Regional mediators sought to calm tensions, with a Qatari delegation arriving in Tehran to discuss efforts aimed at reviving negotiations.

Despite the latest escalation, a senior U.S. official suggested a diplomatic breakthrough could still be possible, saying military operations and negotiations were proceeding on separate tracks.

CONFLICT SPREADS

The conflict has increasingly spilled beyond Iran and Israel, drawing in neighboring countries and threatening shipping routes vital to the global economy.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, remains a major point of contention as disruptions continue to affect energy markets and international trade.

Iran is seeking the lifting of international sanctions, the unfreezing of billions of dollars in assets, and continued influence over shipping through the strategic waterway. The United States insists that any future agreement must prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, an ambition Tehran continues to deny pursuing.

A significant obstacle to a lasting settlement remains the broader regional conflict involving Israel and Iran-backed groups, particularly in Lebanon, where ceasefire violations and retaliatory strikes continue.

CHRISTIANS UNDER PRESSURE

The fighting has also affected religious minorities inside Iran, including Christians who have been caught in the crossfire of the conflict and broader political turmoil.

Christian advocacy groups say believers already face pressure from authorities and have become increasingly vulnerable amid heightened security measures, wartime restrictions, and economic hardship.

Iran ranks ninth on the annual Open Doors World Watch List of countries where Christians face the most severe persecution. The ranking cites government surveillance, arrests of converts from Islam, restrictions on house churches, and pressure from both authorities and society against Christians who leave Islam.

As tensions continue to rise, church leaders have urged prayers for peace and for Christians and other vulnerable communities affected by the conflict across the Middle East.
