VOGELWAARDE, NETHERLANDS (Worthy News) – Dutch police detained a young man l man after four people, including three children, were killed when a car struck a group of cyclists during a school outing near the Belgian border on Thursday, officials said.

Authorities indicated it was not immediately clear whether the arrested 19-year-old suspect was the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash near the village of Vogelwaarde in the southern province of Zeeland.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene as several others were injured, with some taken to hospital for treatment.

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten expressed support for the victims and their families, writing on X that the “horrific and shocking news from Zeeland overshadows everything today.”

DEADLY COLLISION UNDER INVESTIGATION

Authorities stated that a passenger car collided Thursday with a group of 14 pupils and two supervisors taking part in a school camp.

Police reported that three victims died at the scene, while a fourth, a child, later succumbed to injuries in hospital.

Several seriously injured children were transferred to specialized trauma centers, including the University Hospital of Ghent in Belgium, the University Hospital of Antwerp, and Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.

Investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the collision and appealing for witnesses to come forward.

SCHOOL CAMP ENDS IN TRAGEDY

Education State Secretary Judith Tielen also expressed shock over the incident.

“What should have been a wonderful school camp has ended in tragedy,” she wrote. “My thoughts are with the relatives, family members, friends, classmates of the victims, and the school’s staff.”

The tragedy has renewed concerns about road safety in a nation where bicycles remain a central part of daily life.

The Netherlands is home to an estimated 24 million bicycles—more than its population of about 18 million people—and around nine million residents cycle regularly for transport, education, and recreation.

CYCLING SAFETY IN FOCUS

The country is internationally known for its extensive network of dedicated cycling paths and its strong cycling culture.

Yet serious accidents involving cyclists continue to occur, particularly where bicycles and motor vehicles share road space.

Residents left flowers near the crash site as communities across Zeeland struggled to come to terms with the loss of life.

The tragedy is among the worst incidents involving a school cycling group in the Netherlands in recent memory and is likely to intensify debate over road safety measures aimed at protecting children.

Police said the investigation remained ongoing.
