US looks to support democratic protests in South America while disclaiming socialist elements

(Worthy News) – The US has pledged its support to democratic revolutions in South America, while warning against Russian interference.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday vowed to help any “legitimate” government in the region facing a threat of regime change, but said that protests in Ecuador, Columbia, Chile, and Bolivia possessed the “character of legitimate democratic governments and democratic expression.”

Nearly all South American countries have been hit with a wave of protests in the last few weeks, which have taken on the character of both socialist and pro-democratic revolutions, threatening conservative and socialist rulers alike.

Fears of interference by Venezuelan socialist leader Nicolas Maduro and his Russian backers were stirred by comments he made following the outbreak of the continent-wide protests that “the plan is going exactly as we hoped.”
