Iran Threatens To Abandon Nuclear Deal

(Worthy News) – Iran has suggested it will abandon an already shaky deal to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons if an arms embargo on Tehran remains in place. The United States wants to extend the ban, which was due to end in October this year.

But an Iranian leader warned the world that this would mean the death of the nuclear accord. Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said on his twitter website Sunday that the agreement “will die forever” by “circumventing [the] 2231 Resolution and continuing Iran’s illegal weapons sanction.”

He referred to a 2015 United Nations Security Council resolution on the nuclear accord reached between Iran and world powers.
The influential Iranian official also wondered whether Iran’s European Union partners in the deal, who are traditional US allies, would support American demands for extension of an arms embargo. “What will [the] EU do. Save dignity and support multilateralism or accept humiliation and help unilateralism?” Shamkhani asked.

The EU and its member states France and Germany as well as non-members Britain, China and Russia support the nuclear accord or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Last month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that he would request the UN Security Council to prolong the arms embargo ban.

The Israeli government shares US concerns that putting pressure on Iran is essential to prevent a nuclear conflict in the region. Israel has, in the past, claimed to have proof of a secret Iranian nuclear weapons program. Iran maintains it uses uranian enrichment for peaceful purposes.
