(Worthy News) – Iran made clear Sunday it was considering attacking Israel’s port city of Haifa to avenge the killing of its top nuclear scientist.

The hardline Iranian Kayhan newspaper, a mouthpiece of the Islamic government, suggested that any assault be carried out in a way that destroys facilities and “also causes heavy human casualties.”

An opinion piece urged Iran’s leadership to target Haifa if Israel carried out the killing of the scientist who founded the Islamic Republic’s military nuclear program in the early 2000s.

“Undoubtedly, Iran will give a calculated and decisive answer to the criminals who took Martyr Mohsen Fakhrizadeh from the Iranian nation,” added Kamal Kharrazi, a top adviser to Iran’s supreme leader.

Western and Israeli governments long suspected Fakhrizadeh of masterminding a secret nuclear weapons program. He was ambushed on a highway near Tehran on Friday and gunned down in his car.

Iran’s clerical and military rulers have blamed the Islamic Republic’s longtime enemy, Israel, for the assassination. Israel hasn’t confirmed that it was involved in the attack.

Iran has accused Israel of killing several Iranian nuclear scientists since 2010. Israel and other nations say Iran seeks to develop atomic weapons. Tehran claims its nuclear program is only for peaceful energy purposes.
