(Worthy News) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have published a report showing the number of abortions across the United States has declined by 50% since 1980, CBN News reports.

In its report, the CDC said there were 619,591 abortions in 2018 and 612,719 abortions in 2017, compared to the record-high number of 1,429,247 abortions in 1990. CBN notes this is a decline of almost 57 percent in less than two decades.

The figures, however, do not reflect the situation in all the states, CBN News reports. Providing abortion data to the CDC is optional and, in 2017 and 2018, California, Maryland, and New Hampshire refused to provide their numbers.
Nevertheless, Dr. Michael New of Charlotte Lozier Institute said in a tweet that 29 out of the 45 states that submitted data had seen a drop in their abortion numbers in 2016 and 2018. “Since 2009, there has been a 24.2 percent decline in the abortion rate and a 21.8 percent decline in the number of abortions performed. The U.S. abortion rate has declined by over 50% since 1980,” New explained.

New also said that legislative advances and pro-life services had contributed to the substantial decline in numbers of abortions. “The main reason why abortion rates are falling is not because there are fewer unintended pregnancies,” New said. “In fact, the unintended pregnancy rate has fluctuated since 1981. An important reason is that a higher percentage of unintended pregnancies are being carried to term. This shows the pro-life educational, service, and yes, legislative efforts have all been effective at reducing the incidence of abortion.”
