(Worthy News) – Authorities in several European countries banned flights from Britain on Sunday amid mounting fears over an infectious new strain of COVID-19.

The new strain of the novel coronavirus was first discovered in England, but Dutch health officials claimed the Netherlands also detected a coronavirus case with the same British strand.

Denmark and Australia soon followed, prompting the World Health Organization to say it was in “close contact” with British officials over the new strain.

The Netherlands warned it would begin to ban flights from Britain starting Sunday until at least the end of the year. Neighboring Belgium on Sunday also ordered a 24-hour ban on flights and trains between Britain beginning at midnight.

The Italian government announced it would suspend British flights with Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, saying it was “to protect Italy and our countrymen.” France, Germany, and Ireland were reportedly considering similar restrictions.

The new mutation, or variant, has significantly faster transmission rates. However, experts said it does not appear to be “more deadly” or vaccine-resistant.

As officials said cases mount, Britain on Saturday announced increased pandemic restrictions. It was reversing earlier hopes for a more relaxed holiday period as London and parts of the country returned to virtual lockdown.

Israel on Sunday banned travelers from Britain, Denmark, and South Africa, citing concerns about the new strain. The developments overshadowed the plans of millions to celebrate Christmas with loved ones.
