(Worthy News) – During a hearing before the US Public Education Committee last week, Texas Democratic Rep. James Talarico asserted that there are six sexes, not two, the Washington Times reports. The Harvard-educated lawmaker made his assertion during a hearing on House Bill 4042, a measure that would prevent transgender pupils from competing in girls’ K-12 school sports.

While questioning the House Bill sponsor, Republican Rep. Cole Hefner, Talarico said: “The bill seems to think there are two,” the Washington Times reports. “The one thing I want us to all be aware is that modern science obviously recognizes that there are many more than two biological sexes. In fact, there are six, which honestly, Rep. Hefner, surprised me, too.”

Without citing his sources, Talarico went on to explain that the six “really common” sexes are “based on X and Y chromosomes: Not just XX (female) and XY (male), but also single X, XXY, XYY and XXXY. “The point is that biologically speaking, scientifically speaking, sex is a spectrum, and oftentimes can be very ambiguous,” Talarico said.

Testifying in favor of the bill, and citing scientific sources, Beth Stelzer, president of Save Women’s Sports, said studies prove “that the male advantage is immutable [in athletics], and there are in fact two sexes. They are dimorphic: XX, XY.”

Stelzer added: “The other, quote, sexes mentioned are disorders of sexual development that are variants of XX or XY chromosomes. They are still disorders of male or female.”
