WASHINGTON (Worthy News)— Despite threats of violence, the conservative-leaning U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday to overturn the 1973 case Roe v. Wade — which legalized abortion nationwide.

In a highly-anticipated majority ruling, the Court moved to overturn protections on abortion rights in the nation on Friday. The judgment comes after a draft opinion of the court was leaked to U.S. media in early May.

The original leaking of the draft opinion from Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito sparked nationwide protests, including outside of the residences of some of the more conservative court members.

The ruling came amid security concerns after a pro-abortion group threatened to carry out domestic terror, Worthy News reported earlier.

The judgment will transform abortion rights in America, with individual states now able to ban the procedure. Half of US states are expected to introduce new restrictions or bans.

Thirteen have already passed so-called trigger laws that automatically outlaw abortion following the Supreme Court’s ruling. Several others are likely to pass new restrictions quickly.

Justice Alito, in the final opinion issued Friday, wrote that Roe and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the 1992 decision that reaffirmed the right to abortion, were wrong the day they were decided and must be overturned.

We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision,” Alito wrote.

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, denounced the decision.

She said a “Republican-controlled Supreme Court” has achieved that party’s “dark and extreme goal of ripping away women’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions.”

“This cruel ruling is outrageous and heart-wrenching. But make no mistake: the rights of women and all Americans are on the ballot this November,” she added.

However, crowds of anti-abortion activists, who had gathered outside the courthouse for days, erupted in cheers as news of the ruling spread.
